My House is a Mess But so What

My house is a mess, but so what.

Ok I have to admit, I have been trying to get my house under control since we moved in (6 years ago). Don’t judge me, I have always had the mindset that I needed to keep stuff because I never know when I might need it again. Recently I have begun to adopt the mindset that I need to clean house and simplify in order to make room for my blessings. I was on a roll until I had to clean out my work office. My plan was to clean and organize the garage to make room for the stuff that I have to move out, but it has been so dang ole hot (we topped 115 in early July) that I have been unable todo as planned. So my quick fix was to go to store and buy a bunch of containers to stack in the garage until we move into a bigger house. I am even considering, really considering getting a “She Shed,” so that I can corral my workspace and actually get stuff out of the house and garage.

Well I am happy to report that I am taking baby steps, but steps indeed. When I was packing and moving out of my work office, I made the decision to leave behind things I absolutely did not need. A microwave, toaster, Keurig, mini fridge and a few fixtures would be a blessing for the next occupant. It felt so good to let go of the stuff. Of course when I excitedly told my hubby, he was like we could have used that stuff for the yard sale. He is totally an enabler. Believe me, we have enough stuff in that garage to hold numerous garage sales.

Things I have accomplished:
  • Organized my closet and put away all the clean laundry I had
  • Began degreasing the stove
  • Sorted through my books and pulled out ones that I could donate- even had my daughter go drop them off at goodwill
  • Deep cleaned the living room, although you would never know it looking at the mess right now
  • Set up an area in a corner for me to film videos

And…..
That’s about it

Now here are things I want to accomplish:
  • Re-clean living room - move containers to garage
  • Purge and organize my kitchen cubards- wipe them down as well
  • Finish degreasing the stovetop
  • Purge, organize and inventory the pantry

My Filming Area 😢

So I bet you are wondering what my timeline is. Well lets just say, if all goes well and we have the yard sale, then this will be done by the end of the week.

Wish me luck!

Living My Life Like It's Golden

So I recently joined a book club and for the month of July we are reading "Girl Wash Your Face" by Rachel
Hollis. After I finished the first chapter, I an ah a moment. Ok stay with me while I break this down. Those that know me understand that I always have some type of project going on. It could be a craft project, skin care classes or even selling insurance. Add to that, working a full time job as an assistant principal of a high school and then being a basketball/baseball/cheer mom. Sometimes I stress over what people may think of me because I’m always changing things up. I have been asked over and over again, “how do you handle all that stuff?” My response “I don’t know, I just do it.” So it dawned on me that is not the truth, there is so much more to my process. Ok back to my ah ha moment. I’m a teacher by trade and I truly believe, just naturally. I was put on this earth to teach people things but what? How about teaching people about me. Wait what? I can teach people how I do the things I do and still breathe. I can teach them about my lifestyle. And so this Lifestyle Blog was born.

So what exactly is a lifestyle blog? I look at it like this… it’s a record of the things I do in my life that I share with friends (and strangers) with the hope the lessons I learn will help others and keep them from making the same mistakes. So welcome to my blog, its so nice to meet you; virtually. Let’s begin by telling you who they heck I am.

My name is Charne’ M. Tunson and I live in an amazing town in the valley of Los Angeles. I am married to my college sweetheart- who says you don’t get anything out of college- and have three amazing children. Well technically Chloe just turned 18 and is considered an adult, but believe me that girl is all child. Shanel is the middle child and is 16 years old. And my son Shawn Christian is the youngest. I call him My Mercedes because when he becomes a professional athlete, he is going to buy his momma a Mercedes Benz but I digress. My hubby Shawn Paul and I have been married for 18 years (come this August) and if you have done the math you realize that Chloe was born before we were married. Now don’t get me wrong, we didn’t get married because I had a child, we just sped up the process. I will save that for another blog post. Let’s see what else do you need to know about me. Oh yea I mentioned earlier that I was an assistant principal at a high school. Last year made my sixth year as an assistant principal. My first two years I was at a middle school and oh lord, I have tons to share about that experience.

So now that I am at crossroad in my life, I have decided that I will no longer do things just to please other people, but I will do things to please me. This means that my blog will be about all the different things that I enjoy, obsess over and are willing to try. Thanks so much for stopping by, I hope you enjoy this journey.

Connecting with your Teenage Daughter

So let me just start by saying I never imagined raising two teenage girls would be so hard. Some days I'm like, "ooh I can't wait for you to move out {insert eye roll here}. Now mind you my girls are 15 and 17 and are no way ready to be self sufficient but man- sometimes it just gets like that.
Ok I'm thinking the Dr. Jeckel and Mr. Hyde first moved into my home during 7th grade. And it literally happened overnight. Now mind you I spent two years as an Assistant Principal at a middle school so I thought I would have a good handle on my middle schoolers. Umm negative!!!! It was so funny at how well I handled other people's children but when it came to mine, I was just a hotttt mess🔥🔥🔥. I remember one evening it was the honor award ceremony for one of the girls and I
Chloe and Shanel on Prom Day
thought it would be a good gesture to bring her a bouquet of flowers; after all I had seen plenty of other parents to it. Well let's just say my feeling were left wide open because when she acted embarrassed about the flowers and would not even take them out my hand I about lost it😥😥😥. And then no sooner than 20 minutes later she had no quormes about asking me to buy something for her 😡👹. Are you kidding me.
So fast forward to now and I can say I have pretty much learned to roll all that drama off my back. Literally my girls can be ready to go at blows and I'll just walk by in my calm voice and say "cut it out" and go on about my business. Hey no use in me raising my blood pressure hollering and screaming- then they will be calling me the crazy lady😜. There was a time when I would come home from work and go straight into my room and close the door (just like they do) except I was the parent and needed to be running the household. So what has changed? Me🙋🏽, I have changed and as a result so has the attitudes and behaviors of my girls. Now don't get me wrong, we still have shouting matches here and there- but it doesn't last very long and I am usually not involved.

Today is the First Day of the Rest of My Life

For as long as I can remember, I have had the desire to be a business owner; well actually an Entrepreneur. My endeavors in Direct Sales (scrapbooking, health products, beauty and fashion), Event Planning, Graphic Design and Network Marketing have all prepared me for this day- the day when I finally am ready to put on my "big girl panties," and step out into the world of #frempreneurship without looking back. By the way you will earn brownie points if you can name every business I have started ;)

I have always considered myself a personal development junkie- my John Maxwell book collection alone speaks to this ideal. I remember sitting in my office on the set of the Tonight Show and the episode of Oprah came on where she introduced the world to "The Secret." Wow, what a powerful discovery and a world that I immersed myself into. By implementing some of the Secret principles into my life, I began to appreciate the value and made connections between it and my own spirituality, but there was always something that held me back from achieving my destined success.

Fear, passion, commitment "all in," "sold out," laser focus, sacrifice, investment, head down- all buzz words that were supposed to get me going and keep me on the path to success. Yet after over almost 10 years of putting it on the line, I have finally gotten sick and tired of being sick and tired. The powerful and cut throat words of wealth builder Dawniel Winningham have given me the kick in the pants that I have been longing for. She hasn't said anything that I have not heard before, I guess it is just that the time is right for me to finally take control of my life, my destiny and my legacy.

So where do I go from here? Well I have established my #milliondollarrevenue mentality. In fact I have already received my million dollars, but I just have not cashed my check yet. In the book, "The Millionaires of GENESIS," the author expresses that the word millionaire means abundance and happiness. There are numerous references in the book of Genesis to the idea of "Divine Substance" which essentially means WEALTH. Genesis means to begin; to take the first step or to get something going. My focus over the next 90 days will be on the Book of Genesis as I take the first step towards the rest of my life.

So now that I know what I intend to do, it is time to get to work. The very first thing that I will do is Hal Elrod shares his Miracle Morning strategy in which one can transform their business and ultimately their life by simply rising 30 minutes earlier and practicing the MM S.A.V.E.R.S. everyday. Silence, Affirmations, Visualization, Exercise, Reading and Scribing are the simple
habits that if practiced daily in the morning, will catapult me on my journey.
to RISE EARLY. Now I have heard this principle over and over again from numerous successful millionaires, yet it is a simple action that I just have procrastinated in doing- FOR NO REASON AT ALL.

Charne' M. Tunson Biography

Charné M. Tunson Biography

Charné M. Tunson has been an advocate for youth mentorship since she was a very young girl. One of her favorite memories was her first meeting with her mentor, who now happens to be the Vice President and General Manager at KJLH.  It started when Charne’ was in the 8th grade and her mentor Karen, arrived to pick up Charne’ in a Mercedes Benz…Wow thought Charné, I get to ride in a Mercedes!! And it only got better from there.

Simply by spending time with a successful woman, Charné realized that anything is possible.  As she recalls about that very first meeting with Karen, “That day I learned, I too could become a successful black woman,” which she went on to do, dramatically impacting the lives of so many youth and young adults across south Los Angeles.

Charné was born to a 16 year-old single mother in South East Los Angeles and coincidentally spent her first year of life around the Crenshaw High School campus while her mother completed her senior year. Charné’s mother was dedicated to creating the best environment she could for her 3 children (Charné and her two younger brothers Donald Jr. and DeAndre’) and made many sacrifices to support their educational careers; including putting off her own post secondary education. But mom had dreams of her own; she went back to school and graduated from Cal State University Dominguez Hills, the same year that Charné graduated from college, and they both began their pursuit in education together.

After Charné graduated from Crenshaw High School, she went left Los Angeles to attend Clark Atlanta University where she not only met her husband, which was certainly a highlight, but also learned how to survive and thrive on her own.  For Charné, attending college is not just about the formal education, “the life skills you learn while trying to survive four years in a different world is priceless, it’s AMAZING times 10!”  And she highly recommends that every young person leave their local area and attend college, as distance creates a totally different opportunity for growth.  Charné notes that leaving her home to attend college helped to open her eyes to the possibilities that exist outside of South Los Angeles. When asked what else Charné learned in college, she recalls how it taught her to be resourceful when pursuing her goals and to be single-minded about success, allowing no excuses for failure.  All of which she says created the foundation for her successes today.

Upon graduating from college, Charné returned once again to Crenshaw High School to teach, as she felt the need to make an impact on others as her mentors had done for her.  But after 8 frustrating years of feeling like she was not making a significant impact; as a result of her students’ grades not improving, she had a true “Ah Ha” moment and realized just how much of a difference she was making and was in fact having a positive influence on their lives as demonstrated by the following story.

“There was one young who was struggling academically, was a troublemaker in every class and most teachers did not know what to do with him other than send him out of class. A year after he graduated, I saw him at a football game and he came over to say hello, then he continued on, ‘I just want to thank you for all that you did for me. I know that I was not the best student and I gave everyone a hard time, but you really made a difference in my life and you believed in me and I just want to say Thank you.’ That was the moment that I knew I was in the right place at the right time, but taking the wrong approach. I was in fact a mentor and a coach, not a teacher.”

It was this experience, which lead Charné to become the founder of the “Tunson Leadership Foundation”, a leadership based non-profit organization, and launch a mobile coaching agency, “Inner City Educators.”  This newfound sense of purpose and direction allowed her to do what she was so good at and loved doing, mentoring and coaching. Over the past seven years as an educational leader,  non-profit founder and small business owner, Charné has been able to continue her personal mission of touching the lives of youth and helping them grow and achieve their life dreams, as well as teaching them the importance of coaching and mentoring others.  Charné credits her childhood influencers with demonstrating to her the value of mentoring and more importantly providing her with the courage to pursue her dream and follow her passion.

Charné is not even close to being satisfied with her accomplishments; in fact she has only just begun. Her ten-year goals include expanding the leadership foundation to impact the lives of youth across the country, as well as opening a leadership based residential preparatory academy for middle and high school students. Longer range goals are no less inspirational; striving to develop leadership curriculum and have it implemented in every school across the U.S., leading to better prepared youth entering college and the workforce. She also aspires to hold a seat on the US Department of Education Advisory Board, and those of us that know Charné have every confidence she’ll do it!

When asked what words of wisdom Charné has for current mentors and mentees she focuses on the value of the overall experience, suggesting that both mentors and mentees alike take full advantage of every moment, becoming friends and freely sharing feelings, hopes and dreams, setting goals and meeting their commitments to one another.  For all individuals, Charné has this advice, “always say please, thank you and remember to smile. These simple things make a world of difference to yourself and those around you. Now is the time to shape yourself for the rest of your life; time is something that you can never get back, so make the most of your experiences!”

Charné is a tremendous role model and has so much to teach all of us.  But perhaps one key message for all us to remember is her belief that “your current situation is not your final destination. Just because you may not be in the best circumstances, you do not have to stay there forever.”

Gratitude

In the spirit of Thanksgiving (how many times have we heard this phrase ;) I thought I would begin by acknowledging my many blessings. I'm going to have to make this quick as I am supervising my 3 year old as he bathes himself ;)
I am thankful for my family. That is a huge blessing as I know many people do not have a family to be thankful for. I am thankful that my 3 yea old is able to bathe himself and give mommy just a few minutes to be able to update her blog **smile**. I am thankful that on days when I am too tired to supervise the little munchkin, I have an amazing husband that will step in and take over and let me to jump under the covers.
Ok the little man has soaped up and is calling for mommy. More gratitude to come at the next bath hour ;)

Leadership Conference

So as most of you know, I have been preparing for a Leadership Conference hosted by the Western Regional Council on Educating Black Children where I was asked to present a couple of workshops as well as give a "greeting" at a general session. Well it took place this past Thursday, Friday and Saturday in Los Angeles and man, it was a great experience.
First off I originally was only planning to do the greeting on Fri, followed by one workshop, and then another workshop co-facilitated with my mentor and mentee on Saturday. But a few days before, I received a phone call asking if I would be willing to present two back to back workshops on Thursday because they had a last minute cancellation- and of course I agreed. Now let me give you a little back story....

1) I have never presented at this type of larger scale conference before, but I have been to plenty of them and I have even organized a few smaller scale ones so I figured I would be ok.

2) By nature I am a huge procrastinator so although I knew my material to present- I waited and waited to formally organize it- but for some reason that is how I seem to work best.

3) Things always seem to happen all around the same time in my life, which forces me to have a zillion and one things to do like:
      a) on Monday lil Shawn got sent home from school with a fever and the school has a 24 hour incubation period so he had to stay home on Tuesday as well- so you know i got absolutely no work done
      b) I am a volunteer art teacher at the girls school and the Principal asked me to be the coordinator for this upcoming art show for our school site. Its not a big deal, I just had to select art work to be displayed, stick it in a frame, print labels and drop off on FRIDAY- which was also the day of the conference.
      c) Friday was also Dr. Suess's birthday and Parent's were encouraged to come read with their child for the first hour of school. So of course because Shanel is the sentimental type, I had to go read with her- Chloe is like whatever LOL.

4) My creativity is both my gift and my curse because I am always coming up with great ideas in my sleep and am so compelled to wake up and implement them. So in the case of the leadership conference, I was doing a workshop entitled, "The Apple Doesn't Fall Far From the Tree: The Amazing Power of Youth Mentorship" and so I wanted to get some apples and wrap them in cello with a bow and a card attached with my contact info on one side and some personal affirmations on the other for the participants to take with them. It was cute- but man I really need some help for this sickness :)

Ok so back to the conference. Day one general session ran over time (black folks can't never get the timing together) so it forced the presenters to shorten their workshop. Now I have prepared for a 70 minute workshop and they announced for us to shave off 15 minutes and I was cool with that- but no sooner than 30 minutes into my presentation- the facilitator pops in and holds up a sign that says 5 minutes left. Now I am not a mathematical genius but I know that 70 minutes - 15 minutes does not equal 35 mins. And to top it off, I was told to prepare for 25 people in my workshop x 2 workshops, but for some reason I had over 40 people in my first, SHORTENED workshop. All in all I did the best that I could and got nothing but positive feedback despite the challenges. The second workshop was the full 70 minutes and had about 10 people in it so it was a perfect balance afterwards. By the time I got home, I jumped under the covers and was fast asleep getting ready for round two tomorrow.

Friday after the Dr. Suess and art work drop off, I made it to the conference just in time for lunch :) and prepared to address the crowd. I was excited because sitting front and center was Margarite Lamotte, LAUSD School Board member whom I have been trying to get to sponsor my foundation for a while. My mother proudly went over to her and informed her that "her baby" would be speaking, and Mrs. Lamotte smiled and nodded. I took the stage started into the greeting and it was so surreal because all the other speakers had to ask people to stop talking, and you could hear the servers in the background picking up dishes- but it was dead silent in the room and I had actively engaged the audience with my story. I felt great about it and afterwards had so many people offering gratitude and appreciation for the message that I had delivered and made a lot of contacts. My workshop this day was full of Spanish speaking participants and so we had a translator in the room- but it was one of the best, interactive and impactful in my opinion. We had a lot of dialogue and I believe those parents left with a new outlook on developing the leaders within themselves and their children.

Saturday was my apple day so I spent the morning working on my project LOL, then made it to the conference again in time for lunch :) Actually it was in time to hear Mr. Blair Taylor, President / CEO of the Los Angeles Urban League talk about all of the great things that his organization has done for Crenshaw High School- including improving graduation rate by 10% and turning the school around after the Accreditation loss :) ANYWAY it ran long as predicted and because this was the last day of the conference- the audience started to dwindle. By the time we got up to do the workshops- we started with one lady in the audience and by the time we ended it was about 10 total participants. The workshop was great- the content was so informational and I look forward to doing it at more conferences.

Overall it was a great experience. I probably will not do so many workshops at one conference- it was very exhausting, but well worth it! Thank you to all of you that sent your prayers and well wishes. They were heard!

Everyday One of My Dreams Come True

One of my greatest joys next to being a wife and mother, is being able to set an example for youth to follow. It’s amazing to me how much if an impact I actually have on the youth that I work with. Often time I don’t find out this until years later when I ask them to speak at one of my seminars or workshops.
I have to say, I love each and everyone of my former students and I look forward to the great things that are to come from them. I love my current students and look forward to the Personal Transformations that are taking place with them everyday.

Ten Tips to Success

This morning I had the honor of speaking to a classroom of 11th graders after observing them for about 30 minutes. Let me tell you I really miss being in the classroom! I don’t miss all the crap that comes with being a “LAUSD Teacher”, but it felt really good to be in front of the kids. So as I was driving into the city this morning and listening to my weekly audio dose of “The Secret”, I got the idea of these 10 Tips to Success. They seem to work (based upon my experience) in a most situations, and it surely seemed appropriate after observing these youth in their classroom environment, so here they go:

(BTW I promise next time to video tape my talk so you can get the full emotion and passion :)

  1. Smile
  2. Be enthusiastic
  3. Be engaged (in whatever task you are doing)
  4. Ask questions
  5. Be confident (love yourself enough)
  6. Take control (of life, the situation, whatever)
  7. Follow Up (send thank you emails, kind notes etc. to everyone you meet)
  8. Associations (your are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with)
  9. Mentor (get one and become one)
  10. Be Goal driven and Result Oriented

The Christmas Tree Nightmare

Ok I just couldn't wait to get home to blog about this one. So this morning I driving little Shawn to school because I had volunteered to do a Black History project with his preschool class- BTW we made African crowns out of poster board and foam stickers :),

Anyway he was riding very nicely in the back seat looking at an old Christmas Toy Catalogue and when he finished, he put it down and asked me for a fruit snack. (His dad has him hooked on this stuff like crack), then he asks me for what I thought was a "Christmas Tree." I told him that Christmas was over and there were no trees left- OMG he began to get so upset, yelling and tears flowing "I want a Christmas Tree!" It got so bad that I had to pull over the car and threaten to put him out to wait for his daddy to drive by (he was like 2 mins behind us.) So after I pulled over and calmed him down a bit, we continued on. He again asked for a Christmas Tree and I just told him "Ok." He waited for a min, then once he realized that I was not handing him a tree, it began again. All of this while I am driving down Victory Blvd headed for the nightmare that we call the 405 freeway. So I opened up his back pack which is always full of snacks- and it hit me- Krispy Treat! My poor baby wanted a Rice Krispy Treat and there it was sitting in his backpack the whole time.

The really sad part was that he knew it was there because he eats one every morning on the way to school with Daddy. He has this whole routine- 1st its the fruit snack, then its the Rice Krispy Treat, then he drinks his bottle of water, then he takes a quick nap.

And now I went and screwed his whole morning up because I couldn't get it together. I am cracking up inside as I am typing this. I am such a horrible mom for threatening to put my 3 year old out on the side of Victory Blvd for requesting a "Krispy Treat." LOL and as I think back on the whole situation, when he first asked for it, he was so sweet and polite when asking. So can I just smack myself for this one.

So the moral of the story moms, is:
1) Learn the routine established by baby and daddy for the morning commute
2) Brush up on the 3 year old linguistic pattern
3) Don't threaten to put your kid out the car for asking for a Christmas Tree- I mean Krispy Treat LOL

Well after I felt like crap for the rest of the commute- I went into his classroom and made him proud of how creative his mommy really his. All of his classmates loved the art project and his teachers were so impressed at how engaged and excited they were about the activity. The funny thing is that as I was entering the classroom I overheard her tell the kids that if they acted up with me- I was going to put them out of the class. Man word travels fast :)-

Turning 33

So I really have decided to make myself a priority this year. Like many wives and mothers, I have always put taking care of everyone else first, then if there was some time left for me (which there never was), then I would do something for myself. Well in honor of my birthday I did something that I have not done in a long time, I went shopping for me and only for me. I bought some really hot bandage heels (at least thats what Chloe calls them), a pair of skinny jeans which are one size too small, a ton of jewelry (I love the $2.95 prices at H&M) and a couple of lace front wigs. Which by the way I am already addicted to- but I will save that for another day's blog.
It felt really good to shop for me, but of course I will spend Monday returning some things that I just got caught up in the moment with :) but I'm thinking I will pick up another pair of skinny jeans. Hey they really make me feel skinny. I feel good about this birthday. In fact it was one of the better ones, and I got a chance to spend it with my mother, my husband and kids, my father and my girlfriends- all over a three day period.
Whew, not I need a vacation from the celebration.
